What Tamarindo means
Tamarindo is a Mexican drink name of Arabic (via Spanish) origin meaning "Indian date". It comes from Arabic tamr hindī (date of India). It is pronounced tah-mah-REEN-doh, and it is most associated with the whole country.
The tree is African, but Arabic traders named it for India and Spanish took the name whole. In Mexico the pod flavours aguas frescas, chile candy and paletas alike.
